I guess most of you guys have already read or heard about me getting injured at the europa cup finals!
If not… : I broke my left leg, both bone pipies in the lower left leg. Nothing else though, not a scratch no where!
I have really never been afraid of getting hurt or being in a lot of pain. The only 2 thing I do feel horrible about, is to see people unconscious & to see leg fractures.
This weekend I got to experience the amazing feeling of seeing my own leg broken. I have seen it many times on skiers & I have always felt the same intense disgusting feeling when I have seen a badly fractured leg!
What happend??
I was winning the first split & skied good through the most difficult part, but coming into the steepest part I knew there was a big hole in the snow at a big left footer. I came in there & then I didn´t really step on my outside ski, so hitting that hole with my outside ski & without having enough pressure on the ski, it ejected. I was trying to stay on my feet by skiing on my inside ski. But after 20 m I couldn´t stay in the line anymore & my right foot & ski got caught badly in the soft shit & everything just exploded. I tumbled around for a while & I could feel that there were some nasty stuff going on down in my legs. After I stopped tumbling, i started sliding fast down the pitch towards the safety net, I had a second so I looked down to see if everything was ok, wich it was not!!
My nr 1 nightmare just happend, my lower leg was like a over cooked spagetti. It was like someone had removed the bone in it & put it back on me. I hit the safety nets with my back first & stopped there. I was laying on the snow & I quickliy tried to excamine my leg to see if it was true what I jus saw! After lifting my knee & the lower leg was just hanging there I right away knee that this was serious!
Although the pain was kind of intense, the disappointment of seeing my self hurt or injured was a stronger feeling than the pain it self.
After laying there for a couple of seconds, Alouis came down to me & took good care of me together with the paramedics!
Some pictures of one of my longest days in life…

Getting started… In pain V 1.0

Getting my meat wrapped up & ready for transport! Aosta Hospital- Innsbruck privatklinik Hochrum. 8.5 h drive, not sweet at all!

About to loose my patience in the ambulance…The didn´t know the way, so the set the gps on the shortest way instead of the fastest way. We ended up in Switzerland & small tiny turny roads.

My angel, my Hero , my life saver… Professor DR Cristian Fink. About to get down to business!

Having a first look at my new meat… I must say that I was not feeling amazing seeing that!
But after cleaning it up, it looked really good I must say!!

Now I´m going to run around with these suckers for a while, but I will be back swinging within no time!!!!!
Without trying to be mr optimistic & being over postive I really feel good about the whole thing & I´m looking forward to a fast & good recovery!
Also want to thank especially The klinik in Hochrum for their amazing job & how they are treating me!
/Hans

Get well soon Hans! I wish you a speedy recovery! Couldn’t agree more with you about leg fractures being the most horrible injuries to watch. I don’t think i will ever get the image of Henke larsson’s broken leg out of my head…
Is that Jean Claude Van Damme in the last pic?
get well and take care of yourself, Keep à strong viking spirit for time rehab….. all the Best for a great recovery.
Krya på dig!! Fort!!
Thanks for the detailed update, Hans! Sounds like you had tough days but I’m glad, you were in great hands in the end!
To be honest: after reading your Twitter-posts the last days, I thought you were back to your usual optimistic and positive attitude but after reading this blog, I’m actually a bit worried…Please tell me I’m misinterpreting this and you are not lying in your bed right now all depressed and disappointed with probably the same expression on your face as on the pictures!!!
Han, I had to reply to your worries. I really believe our Lionman is gonna be just fine. WE all know there will be ups and downs during his recovery but I think the face you are seeing in the last pics is of our favorite WC skier “high” on medication. That is the look of a narcotic stupor if I have ever seen one and I have seen my share.
Haha, thanks for that explanation, Cjay. I think it was the describtion of the ‘over cooked spagetti’ in combination with the pictures that made me worry at first…;)
God bedring mr.Lionmann.
U are still Lionmann,U will Come back even stronger ok??
Ajajaj, trist att det gick illa med benet men starkt av dig att vara positiv!

Speedy recovery and don’t take too much of this ”good stuff” – but it will help you though these days!!!
Hallo Hans,
Now THAT IS our Lionman ! Giving us the update with all the nitty gritty complete with pics. You know a pic is worth a thousand words.
The blog is gonna be rocking over the next few months what with you all laid up and getting tired of hobbling around on those yellow poles. At least they look like Spring and that should lift your spirits.
So did they rod that shin bone (tibia) or yours? Sure looks like it. When I saw the first few pics I thought you had busted that “pipe” at the knee and that wouldn’t have been good at all. Thank goodness it was lower down near the ankle and not up at the tibial plateau. I mean, the whole things SUCKS but we gotta look on the bright side and keep looking UP and moving FORWARD dammit.
Please don’t tell me Jon is going to be taking care of you….lol……what a dirty trick that would be…..HAHAHA !
Enjoy the euphoria of the narcotics cause it ain’t gonna last. WE have got work to do. Well, YOU have work to do and I have a BIG job cheering you on for the next few months…..LOL
I am praying that your bones heal quickly and soundly so you will be back on piste
in record time. Do what Dr. Fink says and don’t give him any sh*t.
You survive it, Hans. I look forward to reading about your recovery. Best wishes!
Sorry about your injury, get well soon!
On a more humorous note, here’s what you should have done after breaking your leg:
put the bones back in position yourself! You think I’m crazy? Well that’s exactly what Cuche did many years ago (at least that’s what his former coach Patrice Morrisod is telling). He apparently broke his upper leg which was then standing at a right angle. He was screaming like hell and then moved the two parts of his upper leg to make it straight again :-S.
So if you wanna become a true champion, go out there again break your leg and fix it yourself, that’s how the tough ones do
We wait you soon stronger and faster…..LIONMAN!!!!
Ask your doctor for an Iceband it’s great for your leg.
Best wishes on the recovery, Hans. You are in good hands, not least yours with that rebounding spirit.
Take care of yourself and your lady through the coming weeks of recovery (months yet for her I guess).
Made me sick looking at the pics
please double tell us no ligaments tendons miniscus no knee issues just (not just ) broken bones
Broken bones are a dream come true if that is it and the knee is still intact and dominant
Here’s the deal lionman and brother (as men of God we are all brothers)

Duuude, looking at those pictures, I couldn’t help thinking,”So that’s what Frankenstein’s legs looked like!”
But seriously, many of us were really worried for you, despite your brother reassuring us that you seemed to be doing OK- glad to see that you received good care & seem to be in decent spirits. I fully expect you to be roaring down the mountains soon, as a good Lion King should.
Sending you Texas-sized best wishes & positive thoughts,
Sequoia
